Amerock Cabinet Knobs for Kids!

When I first made the decision to open an afterschool art program, I wanted everything, and I mean everything to look exactly how I wanted. I didn’t want to take any shortcuts or later be dissatisfied with a decision I had made. Now, opening an art school is no easy task. If it isn’t ordering tons and tons of construction paper or paint, it’s ordering children’s furniture or chemical-free cleaning supplies. After my huge shipment of art supplies came in and neatly sat in their wooden cabinets, I had a really big problem. The cabinets I ordered did not come with any hardware knobs and pulls. Upon visiting my friend for some business down-time, I saw the cutest Amerock cabinet pull in her kitchen, it was shaped like a zebra. Apparently her house that she recently purchased came with it and she simply couldn’t part with it.

Amerock cabinet knobs come in many children’s series, with everything from a sports zoo animals. I couldn’t think of anything better than having animal and football cabinet knobs in my art school. Now when my students are retrieving supplies, they associate certain supplies with certain animals. The soccer ball cabinet has cotton balls, the ladybug with glitter, the monkey with glue, etc. Couldn’t be happier with this decision.

Hardware Knobs And Pulls Go On Safari

Hardware knobs and pulls come in all shapes and sizes, but none quite so fun as these little guys. ROAR! roars the lion when you pull his tail, OUCH! says the elephant when you open the drawer with his trunk (then he winks, JUST KIDDING!).

They may not perfectly accessorize your new French farmhouse kitchen, but I know a little fella or gal waking up from a nap who would be utterly delighted to live in a room whose magical spaces are guarded by friendly animal hardware knobs and pulls.

We often talk about how hardware knobs and pulls can transform a space easily, quickly and inexpensively. We believe in the power of a well chosen doorknob or ring pull. And we love kids! It was only natural for us to want to offer a selection of fun knobs, pulls and hooks that the little ones would enjoy.

You want your children to feel a sense of pride and ownership in their own private room. So be a good neighbor — and parent! ; ) — by contributing to the kid-friendly atmosphere with the wildest hardware knobs and pulls they’ve ever imagined!

Schaub Hardware Transforms Your Kitchen Into A French Farmhouse

Schaub hardware is the first step toward turning your kitchen into a French farmhouse kitchen. Their French Farm collection comes in shades of Ancient Bronze and Antique Nickel. Each knob or pull has the small flourishes you’d expect to see on drawers in Provence.

Next, dried lavender. No French farmhouse is missing dried lavender. Hang it upside down from a ceiling rafter, as if you had picked it in your own fields and were just now drying it.

While, you’re up there, hang some garlic wreathes, too! And herb bundles of various sorts, but especially rosemary and thyme.

Now, what happens when you tug on a drawer pull from the Schaub hardware line? What is revealed when the drawer is open? Well, think like a French farmer. Good, sharp knives are essential. Maybe some antique silverware. An oyster knife, for when family comes back from a day trip to Marseilles? And most importantly: a corkscrew!

Make sure that your windowsills are decorated with cobalt glass and small Provencal pottery bowls!

On the counter, you’ll want to keep a small bowl of fleur-du-sel, the “flower of the salt” that is equivalent to the cream on fresh milk, raked early in the morning by salt farmers in islands like Il-de-Re.

You could start with any of these elements, but to set the tone, our suggestion is Schaub hardware.

Hardware Knobs And Pulls Can Save Your Life

Let’s talk about fire safety!

Sometimes fire does not announce itself as towering inferno. Sometimes it sneaks up on you. That’s why conscientious people in the construction industry place fire safety chief among their concerns when building a home or commercial building meant for human occupation. That’s why there are smoke detectors, CO2 detectors, fire rated doors, hardware knobs and pulls.

It’s been a long time since you sat in your elementary school auditorium learning “Stop, Drop & Roll” from your local fireman, so we wanted to give you some tips on fire safety. Since we’re in the hardware knobs and pulls business, our mini refresher focuses on how to tell if there is a fire on the other side of a door.

1. If you have a peephole, look through to see if there are signs of smoke or flame. Do not put your head against the door! If there is a fire, you can get burned.

2. Do not grab the hardware knobs and pulls. If there is a fire right outside your door, your hand could be seriously injured due to the heat conduction through the metal hardware. If you need to check the doorknob or the door for heat, always use the back of your hand. This way, if your hand gets burned, you can still use it. If you need to climb down a rope or ladder, it is very difficult if your palm is in pain.

3. If the door hardware isn’t hot, crack the door open. Keep your eye on the top of your door. If there is smoke, it will normally be towards the ceiling. If there is no smoke, you may attempt to exit the building.

4. If there is smoke, close the door immediately. Use a phone to call for help, then wet some towels and place them on the cracks in your door, especially at the bottom.

5. Do not attempt to brave your way through a burning house or building unless the fire is in your room! Wait for the fire department to rescue you.

Bear Proof Door Knobs Soon To Be Required??

So you want to be able to choose which hardware knobs and pulls you get to put on your door? Then Aspen and Pitkin County might not be the right place for you.

Government officials are current contemplating and debating legislation that would require homeowners and business owners to install specific-type of doorknobs in an effort to stop bears from breaking in. This Wednesday, the Pitkin County commissioners will discuss the matter.

The district wildlife manager for the Colordado Division of Wildlife, Kevin Wright, has urged the commissioners to require all doors have round knobs, calling them “huge” when asked about their contribution to human safety.

There are some issues in dictating the kind of hardware knobs and pulls architects use. The most specific instant concerns the Americans with Disabilities Act, which dictates that all American businesses must have lever action doorknobs.

Unfortunately, it is these same lever action doorknobs that wild bears are beginning to figure out. “they’re not good in bear coutry,” states Wright.

“We have bears that just run around and slap lever handled doorknobs until one opens,” claims the head of Pitkin County’s Community Development Department, Cindy Houben.

Researchers have discovered round doorknobs are harder for bears to open.

Ostiumtractophobia: Fear of Doorknobs

So here’s a weird one for you. “Ostiumtractophobia.” The fear of doorknobs.

Surprisingly, the internet (which I was convinced knew everything about anything) has very little on Ostiumtractophobia. Which is a shame, because there are a lot of things I’d like to know. Is it a fear that a doorknob will jump out and attack you, or is it just a fear of touching dooknobs? Would wearing gloves help a victim conquer this fear?

Is Ostiumtractophobia a fear of all doorknobs, or are their specific brands that concoct more fear than others? Would a Belwith Keeler Knob be considered scarier than an Amerock Cabinet Knob? And what about pulls? Does someone with Ostiumtractophobia differentiate between hardware knobs and pulls?

Do people with Ostiumtractophobia often get misdiagnosed with agoraphobia, the fear of leaving ones home?

And what about elevators, automatic opening doors, or turn-cycles? Are they not scary at all to someone who suffers from Ostiumtractophobia, because the knob isn’t present… or are they actually scarier, because it means the knob could be hiding and therefore could jump out and attack from anywhere?

Ostiumtractophobia is so rare, unfortunately, that it does not even show up on the www.phobialist.com website. A series of smaller, less known websites have confirmed that yes, a disease known as Ostiumtractophobia does in fact exist, and that it is a fear of doorknobs… but as of yet, no further details have been discovered, and we’ll just have to wait for the answers to these questions.

“Dumb As A Doorknob”

English is full of crazy sayings.

From “don’t cry over spilled milk” to “the bottom of my heart,” the majority of these phrases have become so commonly and widely accepted that we don’t even stop to think where they come from. Others at first glance appear logical, though after closer examination it becomes clear there is much more to them than meets the eye.

The ideal example of that is the often-used phrase “dumb as a doorknob,” usually used to describe a person who is moronic and lacks intelligence. (Some great public examples include Glenn Beck, Ron Artest, or Paris Hilton) The phrase seems to make sense. After all, doorknobs aren’t all that smart. Regardless of whether it’s an Amerock cabinet knob or a Belwith Keeler knob, it doesn’t really matter what company produced the doorknob, it likely doesn’t have a very high IQ.

But what you probably don’t know is the phrase was initially “dumb as a doornail,” which was referencing the actual nail behind a door knocker. After being used several times, this nail would get beaten and destroyed… making it the ‘dumbest’ of nails.

It’s probably due to the fact that very few doors have knockers these days that the phrase has been changed. It could also be credited to the British slang term, “nob,” which is used to describe the male genitalia.

Knobs or Pulls???

Sure, it may not seem like a major decision. But every day, every time you reach for that drawer, you’re going to be reaching for either a knob or a pull. So it doesn’t matter whether you’re obsessed with every little detail or just someone who cares about the big-picture stuff: Choosing between knobs and pulls is a big deal. It’s a decision that reflects your style and personality, and it’s not something to be taken lightly.

The simplest conclusion when debating your hardware knobs and pulls decision is to just make your cabinet hardware match the door hardware as much as possible. In other words, if the door has Amerock pulls, get the cabinet Amerock cabinet pulls. If the door has a Belwith Keeler knob, get the cabinet a Belwith Keeler knob.  Simple as that.

Or, you can reverse it. If you can’t decide which you prefer, just go the opposite route, and get your cabinet drawers pulls and your door drawers’ knobs… or vice-versa! Hey, it’s your space, you should have it the way you like it.

Personally… and this is just me, of course… but I prefer cabinet knobs. I’m big on personalization (which is why I don’t take any decision lightly, even when it’s just about hardware knobs and pulls) and the fact that knobs typically come in a lot more styles and patterns has just naturally drawn me to them.
